In other right field news...
Victor Diaz's move from second base to the outfield appears to be official, although it's not clear yet whether he'll start the season at
Binghamton or
Norfolk. His offensive numbers at AA last year certainly warrant a promotion. Diaz himself asks, "Have you seen my numbers?" But there's some talk in the article about letting him learn to play the position at the lower level. Even if he does start off in Binghamton, I can't imagine he'll be there for long. If he hits like he's shown he can, and plays a passable right field, he'll be on the fast track to the majors.
I've been calling for this move since the day
Vladimir Guerrero became an
Angel and am very pleased to see the
Mets go through with it. Still, Diaz's potential shouldn't dissaude them from going after
Milton Bradley, particularly if they can get him without including Diaz in the deal. The Mets have a hole in right field right now, not three or four months from now, and if they can fill it with an inexpensive, productive hitter like Milton Bradley without giving up any key elements of the team's future, I think that is absolutely the right move to make. Just because they Mets don't know what it's like to have too many outfielders doesn't mean it would be a bad situation to be in.
